PeerPesa requires every account to pass KYC (Know Your Customer) verification before it can generate API keys. Verification confirms who you are, or who owns your business, so PeerPesa can meet its compliance obligations in each corridor it serves. This page explains which account type to choose, what documents to prepare, and how verification unlocks sandbox and production access.

Before you start

Choose the account type that matches how you will use the API:
Use a business account if your integration will move funds for customers. Higher transaction limits and additional corridors are available to verified businesses.

Documents to prepare

  • Government-issued photo ID (national ID, passport, or driver’s license)
  • A selfie or live photo for identity matching
  • Proof of address dated within the last 3 months (utility bill or bank statement)
  • Phone number and email address you can verify
If you manage several affiliated entities, you can reuse director and ownership details across them instead of re-entering them for each one.

Verification statuses

Sandbox and production access

PeerPesa runs two separate environments. Each has its own dashboard, API keys, and base URL.
1

Build in sandbox

After KYC approval, generate sandbox keys and test the full flow: rates, quotes, onramps, offramps, and beneficiaries.
2

Request production access

When your integration works end to end in sandbox, request production access from the dashboard. Compliance may ask for details about your use case and expected volume.
3

Go live

Once production access is approved, generate live keys in the production dashboard and switch your base URL to https://api.peerpesa.co/v1.
Never use live keys for testing. Sandbox and production keys are not interchangeable, and requests sent with the wrong key for an environment return 401 unauthorized.

Generate API keys

Create your public and secret key pair and request a token.
